Trojans "Poore" It On Lees-McRae, 79-73

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Chris Poore scored a career-high 19 points, and Kennedy Bass, Travis Tate, and Joel C. Zimmerman added 14 apiece to lead Anderson College to a 79-73 CVAC victory over Lees-McRae Monday night at the Williams Gym. Anderson, 12-13 overall and 8-10 in the CVAC, kept alive its hopes for a .500 or better season and all but locked up a first-round home game in next week’s conference tournament. AC has now won three of its last four. The loss drops Lees-McRae 9-16, 5-13. Poore, playing in front of a small cheering section from his hometown of Greeneville, Tenn., was 7-for-10 from the field and had a game-high 10 rebounds. Poore's previous high was 18 points four times. He now has scored in double figures in five straight games and seven of his last eight. The Bobcats were led by Tyreek Ramseur with 19 points. Anderson shot 60 percent from the field (27-45) and outrebound the Bobcats, 42-35, which allowed AC to survive a season-high 26 turnovers. The Trojans led 69-58 with 2:12 left, but the Bobcats went on a 6-0 run to slice the AC lead to 69-64 with 1:42 to play. But Anderson made 7 of 10 free throw attempts to push its lead back to 76-64 with 51 seconds remaining. The Bobcats got no closer than seven points the remainder of the game. A third consecutive 3-point by Williams pulled the Bobcats to within four – 53-49 – with 7:06 to play, but the Trojans answered with a 6-2 run for a 59-51 lead with 6:07 left. J.R. Howell made a trey and Poore converted a three-point play for the six points. Howell made 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Back-to-back 3-point baskets by Henery Williams cut the Anderson lead to 51-46 with 8:15 to play. Leading 44-38, the Trojans got a 3-point basket by Howell and a field goal by Poore off a goal tending call for a 49-38 lead with 11:54 to play. A 7-0 run increased Anderson’s lead to eight – 44-36 – with 14:10 to play. Zimmerman had a 3-point basket and a leaning 12-footer on the baseline to provide five of the points. The Trojans survived a shaky start to take a 32-28 lead at the half. Anderson had six turnovers in a nine-possession stretch and trailed 13-10 but then scored on six straight possessions to take a 21-16 lead with 9:33 left in the first half. Bass led the surge with three baskets during the 11-3 Trojan run. A basket by John LeSueur and a 3-point goal by Zimmerman gave Anderson its biggest lead of the first half – 26-18 – with 5:25 remaining. Anderson shot 63 percent from the field (12-19) in the first half while limiting Lees-McRae to just 25 percent (9-35). During a 12-minute stretch in the first half, the Bobcats made just 3 of 19 shots from the field. In the first half, Anderson had 13 turnovers to just five for Lees-McRae.
