Pfeiffer Survives AC Upset Bid

MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- Pfeiffer made 12 free throws in the final 1:11 to hang on and beat upset-minded Anderson College 86-78 in a CVAC game Thursday night. Pfeiffer, 20-1 overall and 13-1 in the CVAC, could not shake Anderson until the final minute. There were 17 lead changes and eight ties in the game. The difference in the game was the free throw line. Pfeiffer, ranked No. 1 in the East Region, made 25 of 31 from the stripe to outscored Anderson (12-17) by 13 points. The Falcons, who lost Monday night at Mount Olive on a 75-foot buzzer beater by Marcus West, built an eight-point lead in the first half but two free throws by Kennedy Bass and a basket by Chris Poore at the buzzer cut Pfeiffer's halftime lead to 37-34. A 3-point goal by Joel C. Zimmerman and a basket by Selynto Anderson gave Anderson a 45-44 lead with 15:11 to play. After Anderson made two free throws to tie the game at 60 with 7:22 left, the Falcons started taking control. Pfeiffer built a seven-point lead -- 75-68 -- with 1:56 to play. The Trojans got no closer than four points the rest of the way. Pfeiffer was led by Damien Argrett with 21 points and 11 rebounds and Rico Grier with 21 points. Anderson placed four players in double figures. Zimmerman finished with 21 points, Osvaldo Haynes scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, Bass finished with 15 points, and Anderson added 13 points and four assists. Anderson shot 50 percent from the field, while Pfeiffer shot 43 percent. AC-Pfeiffer Box Season Statistics
