Belmont Abbey Beats AC In Defensive Struggle

ANDERSON, S.C. – Jon Adams made a steal with 14 seconds remaining and Belmont Abbey made three free throws in the final 14 seconds to hang on for a 55-49 victory over Anderson College in a CVAC men’s game Monday night at the Abney Center. Belmont Abbey, 14-6 overall and 8-5 in the CVAC, jumped out to a 24-6 lead in the first 11 minutes of the game. But Anderson, 9-10 and 5-7, whittled the deficit to 12 by the half and finally managed to tie the game at 40 with 7:19 remaining. But after the Trojans tied the game, Demtrius Howard buried two 3-point goals and Adams converted a 3-point play to give the Crusaders a 49-40 lead with 5:37 remaining. But a field goal and two free throws by Chris Poore and a 3-point goal by Osvaldo Haynes, the first of his career and just his third attempt ever, got the Trojans back to within two – 49-47 – with 2:29 to play. But AC never managed to tie the game or take the lead. Greg LaVann made a huge 3-point goal for the Crusaders with 44 seconds remaining, and Adams made one free throw and Rafael Moreira made two free throws in the closing seconds to seal the victory. Unlike the first meeting at Belmont on Jan. 17, a 104-95 double overtime victory by Belmont Abbey, Monday night’s game was defensive from the start. The Crusaders shot 23 percent in the second half to finish at 37 percent. Anderson, which had shot 60 percent or better from the field in three of its last four halves, shot just 30 percent from the field. LaVann, who made four treys, led the Crusaders with 14 points. Demetrius Howard added 12, and John Gordon had 10 for Belmont Abbey. Anderson was led by Joel C. Zimmerman with 14 points and Poore with 11. Belmont Abbey won the boards, 44-31. Haynes was the game’s leading rebounder with nine. Belmont Abbey’s bench outscored Anderson’s bench, 28-14. AC-Belmont Abbey Box Season Statistics
