Mount Olive Gets Past AC, 65-62

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Mount Olive rallied from an 11-point deficit in the final nine minutes to beat upset-minded Anderson 65-62 in a CVAC game Friday night at College Hall. Mount Olive, 14-2 overall and 8-1 in the CVAC, outscored Anderson 25-11 in the final 9:36 to pull out the victory. Six free throws by Maurice Horton took the homestanding Trojans from a 53-50 deficit to a 56-53 lead with 3:03 to play. Trailing 63-56, AC got two late 3-point goals from Chris Poore and J.R. Howell to cut Mount Olive's lead to 63-62 with nine seconds left. Two free throws by Janson, who scored seven of his nine points in the final 1:23, with eight seconds left gave Mount Olive a three-point lead. Mount Olive, ranked second in this week's East Region poll, was led by Victor Young with 13 points and Marcus West with 12. Anderson, 7-8 overall and 3-5 in the CVAC, was led by Joel C. Zimmerman with 14 points and Travis Tate and Osvaldo Haynes with 12 apiece. Anderson shot 51 percent from the field and limited Mount Olive to 37 percent. The big difference came at the free throw line where Mount Olive outscored AC by 10 points. Mount Olive was 15-for-21 from the line, while AC was 5-for-7. Led by Sean Barnett's eight rebounds, Mount Olive dominated the glass, 42-23. Mount Olive had 21 second-chance points to just six for AC. Anderson led 33-26 at the half. The visiting Trojans jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first five minutes. AC made 10 of its first 13 shots to build a 21-10 lead with 10:29 left. Mount Olive used a 13-5 run to cut the AC lead to 24-21 with 7:24 left. But a 3-point basket by Zimmerman and a layup by Haynes pushed AC's lead back to eight -- 31-23 -- with 4:03 left.
