Crusaders Outlast AC In Double OT

BELMONT, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey outscored Anderson College 16-11 in the final 3:23 of the second overtime to take a 104-95 CVAC victory Saturday night. The Crusaders, 10-3 overall and 4-2 in the CVAC, placed five players in double figures. Rafael Moreira led Belmont Abbey with 27 points. He was followed by Greg LaVann with 18 points, Damien Humphrey with 15 points, Antonio Howard with 13 points, and John Gordon with 10. Anderson, 6-6 and 2-3, was led by Joel C. Zimmerman with 27 points and Travis Tate with a career-high 23 points. Chris Poore added 14 and J.R. Howell chipped in 12 for the Trojans. Anderson shot 57 percent from the field and 54 percent (14-26) from behind the arc. Zimmerman was 6-for-12 from behind the arc while both Howell and Tate were 4-for-5. A three-point play by LaVann with 2:36 left gave the Crusaders an 89-88 lead. After an AC miss, Howard drained a 3-point goal to increase the Belmont Abbey lead to 92-88 with 1:51 left. A basket by Moreira pumped the Crusader lead to six -- 94-88 -- with 1:21 left. Belmont Abbey finished the game at 50 percent from the field and 40 percent (11-27) from 3-point range. The first half ended tied at 32. There were 15 lead changes and six ties in the first half. The largest lead for either team was four by Belmont Abbey. The Trojans built a 50-40 lead eight minutes into the second half, but the Crusaders rallied to take a 69-66 lead. After AC's Travis Tate and Belmont Abbey's Greg LaVann swapped 3-point goals to keep the Crusader lead at three, Zimmerman made a 3-point basket with 27 seconds remaining to tie the game at 72. The Crusaders had two shots in the final five seconds but could not convert. There were 19 lead changes and 10 ties in regulation. In the first overtime, Antonio Howard made a 3-point goal with 1:53 left to give Belmont Abbey an 81-78 lead. But two baskets by Zimmerman gave Anderson an 82-81 lead with 30 seconds to play. With eight seconds remaining, Damien Humphrey made one of two free throws to send the game to a second overtime. The Trojans won the boards, 40-33. Kennedy Bass was the game's top rebounder with a career-high 14. AC had three players -- Zimmerman, Bass and Poore -- play more than 41 minutes.
