St. Andrews Hangs On To Beat AC, 76-75

ANDERSON, S.C. -- A jump shot by Kennedy Bass with two seconds remaining bounced off the rim allowing St. Andrews Presbyterian College to hang on for 76-75 victory over Anderson College in a CVAC men’s game Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center. St. Andrews jumped out to a 19-8 lead in the first nine minutes of the game and held a 35-32 lead at the break. But the Trojans kept clawing until a 3-point goal by Chris Poore gave AC its first lead – 45-44 – with 14:26 remaining. From that point, there were five more lead changes and six ties. A 3-point basket by Justice Graham gave St. Andrews a 72-69 lead with 2:29 to play. AC cut the St. Andrews lead to one three times in the final 2:08 but never got the lead back. Leading 76-75, the Knights missed a chance to extend their lead when Clarence Ferguson missed a jumper, and the Trojans got the ball with 10 seconds remaining. AC advanced the ball up the floor and Bass got it near the top of the key. He penetrated into the lane and put up a jumper that bounced away. A mad scramble ensued and neither team could control the ball before the final buzzer. St. Andrews, 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the CVAC, was led by Graham with 22 points, Derrick Darkis with 17, and Hazael Andrew with 13. Graham was 8 for 11 from the field and made 5 of 9 shots from behind the arc. Anderson, 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the CVAC, placed four players in double figures. Joel C. Zimmerman led the Trojans with 19 points. He was followed by Chris Poore with 18 points, Bass with 16 points, and Travis Tate with 11. The Knights shot 48 percent for the game and 48 percent in both halves. AC shot 46 percent after shooting 57 percent (17-30) in the second half. Both teams had 33 rebounds. Andrew was the game’s leading rebounder with nine. Bass had eight rebounds for AC. In addition to having the same number of rebounds, both teams had 28 field goals and 11 turnovers.
