Zimmerman Tallies 28 As AC Knocks Off Newberry

ANDERSON, S.C. – Joel C. Zimmerman scored a career-high 28 points to lead Anderson College to an 83-71 victory over Newberry in a non-conference game Friday night at the Abney Center. The victory improves the Trojans to 5-2, their best start ever as a four-year program. The loss drops Newberry to 2-5. Zimmerman, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., was 10-for-14 from the field and 5-for-8 from behind the arc. His previous high was 22 points against Longwood on Jan. 18, 2003. Following Zimmerman for the Trojans were Chris Poore with 16 points, Travis Tate and Osvaldo Haynes with 11 points apiece and Kennedy Bass with 10. Newberry was led by Brandon Moses with 18 points and Brian Reese with 13 points. The Indians led by as many as eight points in the first half, but AC put together a 19-7 run in the final six minutes of the first half to take a 41-37 lead at the half. A basket by Haynes gave AC a 58-45 lead with 13:07 left. From that point, the Indians started cutting into the Trojan lead. A basket and four free throws by Carter in a 90-second span sliced the AC lead to 65-61 with 6:44 left. But Zimmerman nailed a 3-point basket at 5:43 to stop the Newberry run. The Indians go no closer than five points the rest of the way. Zimmerman’s final trey of the game at 2:31 gave the Trojans a 75-65 lead. Anderson shot 53 percent from the field while limiting Newberry to 35 percent. The Trojans made 10-for-18 from behind the arc. The Trojans shot 59 percent (16-27) in the first half. Newberry won the boards, 41-35, but Bass was the game’s leading rebounder with eight. The Indians had 23 offensive rebounds. Anderson averaged 1.04 points per possession.
