Trojans Fall to Second-Ranked Tampa at FSC/Terrace Hotel ClassicSeptember 7, 2013
ANDERSON, S.C. –The number two-ranked Tampa Spartans held off Anderson, 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 16-25, 25-12) in NCAA Division II volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the FSC/Terrace Hotel Classic, hosted by Florida Southern at Jenkins Field House.
Anderson slipped to 0-4 on the young season, while Tampa, which is favored to claim its ninth consecutive Sunshine State Conference title, moved to 4-0.
The Spartans pushed out to a 10-3 advantage in the opening set before Anderson climbed back within 17-12 on as service from freshman Tinsley Hallman. But it was as close as AU would get, as Tampa countered with five unanswered points to open a double-digit lead, at 22-12, and went on to claim the first set.
The second frame also saw Tampa garner an early lead at 12-4, but the Trojans took advantage of Spartan errors to battle back within 14-10. But UT posted a 9-3 spurt to edge out to a double-digit lead, 23-13, before wrapping up the second frame for the win.
The Trojans rallied from an early 5-1 deficit in the third set on the strength of an 11-6 outburst that saw the Trojans gain their first lead of the match, at 12-11. With Hallman serving, AU scored five unanswered points and went on to push out to a double-digit cushion of their own, at 23-13, on an error by the Spartans. AU closed the set on a kill by Hallman.
Tampa never trailed in the fourth and final set, as the Spartans jumped out to a 9-2 lead en route to claiming the win.
Shannon Gillespie and Priscilla Irizarry each recorded nine kills for the Trojans, while Hailey Pittman added eight. Meghan Cautero dished out 24 assists and recorded a match-high 15 digs, while Alix Hooker notched 13 digs and Kelley Lacey came up with 10 digs.
Following a five-day layoff, Anderson continues its six-match road swing by opening South Atlantic Conference action at Coker on Friday. First-serve versus the Cobras, who along with Queens are newcomers to the league this season, is slated for 7 p.m.
