Trojans Open With Victory Over Georgia College

GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Joel Zimmerman scored a game-high 24 points, while Chris Poore and Jerome Johnson added 14 and 13 respectively Saturday night to lead Anderson College to a 70-54 non-conference victory over Georgia College & State University in the first game of the Bearcat Classic in Horne Arena. On Sunday, Georgia College will play Mars Hill at 2 p.m. and Lander will face Anderson at 4 p.m. Georgia College was led by Duke Gibbs' 20 points. The Bobcats were hampered by 27 turnovers. Zimmerman, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., was 7 for 13 from the field and made 5 of 9 attempts from behind the arc. Zimmerman also had four of AC's 15 steals. Poore and Johnson, a pair of freshmen, were making their first appearances for the Trojans. Poore, a native of Greeneville, Tenn., made 6 of 10 shots from the field in 32 minutes, while Johnson, a native of Spartanburg, S.C., made 4 of 9 shots, handed out three assists and had two steals in 30 minutes. Anderson, which led 35-21 at halftime, connected on 23-of-50 field goals for 46 percent, while GC&SU was 15-of-41 for 36.6 percent. AC made 15-of-21 free throws for 71.4 percent, while GC&SU was 22-of-27 for 81.5 percent. The Trojans limited Georgia College to 27 percent from the field (5-18) in the first half.
