Men's Basketball Team Picked Seventh In CVAC Poll

THOMASVILLE, N.C. -- Queens University of Charlotte tops the 2002-2003 CVAC preseason poll as voted on by the conference coaches for the third consecutive year, the conference office announced Thursday afternoon. After finishing last season with a 29-4 overall record and an 18-2 mark in the CVAC, the Royals will look to repeat their CVAC Regular Season Championship. The Royals dominated the preseason poll with 8 of 11 first place votes as they will try to build on last years NCAA Division II Final Four Appearance. New head coach Barclay Radebaugh will count on senior leaders Spencer Ross, Moustapha Diouf, and Hector Valenzuela to lead the Royals. Pfeiffer University moves up one spot from last year's poll into the No. 2 position in this year's preseason poll. The Falcons return seven of their top eight players from a team that went 22-9 overall (13-7 CVAC) and was one victory shy of the NCAA Tournament a year ago. The Falcons led the country (Division I, II, and III) in scoring and margin of victory, averaging 95 points per game. Belmont Abbey College finished third in the preseason balloting. The two-time defending CVAC Tournament Champions will be replacing four starters off of their 24-7 (15-5 CVAC) NCAA Tournament qualifying campaign. Veteran head coach Dip Metress will look for seniors Jon Adams and John Gordon to spark the Crusaders. Anderson College, with eight new players on the roster, was picked in a tie for seventh with Erskine. Rounding out the men's poll 4-12 were: Mt. Olive, Barton, St. Andrews, Anderson & Erskine (tied), Limestone, Coker, and Lees-McRae respectively. CVAC Men's Basketball Preseason Poll (# of First place votes in parenthesis) 1.
