Erskine Too Much For Cold-Shooting Trojans

DUE WEST, S.C. -- Erskine jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first nine minutes of the game and then held off an Anderson College run in the second half to beat the Trojans 48-37 in the first round of the men's CVAC Tournament Monday night at the Galloway Center. Erskine, 13-15 overall, advances to play top-seeded Queens University of Charlotte Wednesday in Charlotte. Anderson ends its season at 9-19. Both teams struggled from the field. Erskine made just 16 of 42 from the field, while Anderson made just 14 of 46. In the first half, the Flying Fleet shot 40 percent from the field while Anderson managed just 22 percent. The Trojans made just five baskets in the first half. Anderson's 37 points was a season low. The previous low was 47 against Presbyterian on Jan. 13. Erskine led 23-14 at the half and held a 12-point lead -- 27-15 -- five minutes into the second half. In the next four minutes, the Trojans put together a 7-2 run to cut the Fleet lead to five -- 27-22 -- with 11:14 remaining. Anderson got to within five points one more time before Erskine pulled away for good. A 3-point goal by Bobby Isom pushed the Fleet lead back over double digits -- 35-24 -- with 6:48 to play. Erskine's lead never got below 13 points the rest of the way. Its biggest lead of 19 points -- 45-26 -- came with 2:49 left. Erskine was led by Jeff Wiersma with 16 points, Isom with 12, and Markus Oertelt with 10. Cory Lundeen, playing in his final game for the Trojans, was the lone Anderson player in double figures with 15 points. Erskine, led by Wiersma's 14 rebounds, dominated the glass, 38-26.
