
Hash and Owens Named to the AFCU Gold Standard
March 8, 2013ANDERSON, S.C. – Men’s basketball’s Chandler Hash and women’s tennis player Avery Owens have been named to the Anderson Federal Credit Union Gold Standard for their outstanding performances in the month of February.
Owens, a junior from Clinton, S.C., posted a stellar 6-1 singles record during the month of February and was an undefeated 4-0 in South Atlantic Conference play. She closed out the month with a five-match win streak. Owens teamed with junior Lauren Trumbull and sophomore Karen Ching to go 4-1 in doubles’ action during the month.
She was named SAC Player of the Week on Feb. 25, after posting a perfect 8-0 combined singles and doubles record on the week, including six combined wins in conference play at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, and No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. She helped lead the Trojans to a 3-1 team record, as AU defeated SAC opponents Newberry and Mars Hill and nonconference foe Limestone– all on the road, with the lone setback, a narrow 5-4 decision, coming at Tusculum.
Hash helped lead the Trojan men’s basketball team to a 6-2 record in February, averaging a team-high 21.4 points per contest on the strength of 59.1 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The 6-foot guard was a perfect 32-of-32 from the charity stripe during the month.
He was named SAC Player of the Week on Feb. 11 after averaging 30 points on the week, including a career-high 38-point outburst in the Trojans’ 80-64 road win at Catawba. Hash scored 22 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds in the road win past Newberry, while adding two assists and a steal. He was 7-of-14 from the field versus the Wolves and connected on 6-of-11 treys. The Greer, S.C. native was 10-of-15 from the field at Catawba, including 6-of-9 from beyond the arc and was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line. He also added a pair of blocked shots and two assists.
