Top-Seeded Trojans Down No. 8 Seed LMU - Advance to SAC Semifinals
March 7, 2013ANDERSON, S.C. – Paced by conference player of the year Alissa Diaz’s game–high 22 points, No. 1 seed Anderson advanced to the semifinals of the 2013 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament by overwhelming eighth-seeded Lincoln Memorial, 76-46, Wednesday night at the Abney Athletic Center.
Top-seeded Anderson (21-8) advances to meet No. 4 seed Newberry in Saturday’s tournament semifinals at noon in Furman’s Timmons Arena. Lincoln Memorial had its season end at 14-15.
Diaz added a game-high seven rebounds and three assists, while senior forward Tilde Ahlin netted 14 points and second-team All-SAC selection Breonda Shannon notched 11 points and swiped four steals. The Trojans out-shot LMU, 54.4 percent to 36.4 percent and held a 37-20 rebounding advantage.
Junior guard Kalasia Green led the Lady Railsplitters with 12 points, while sophomore guard Edina Musa recorded six rebounds.
The Trojans snapped the lone tie score of the game at 2-2 by reeling off nine unanswered points, with sophomore guard Sierra Simpson giving AU a lead it would not relinquish with a jumper and senior guard Amanda Parris capping the early outburst with a 3-pointer from deep on the left side with 15:08 on the clock.
Anderson pushed out to a double-digit, 18-7 lead midway through the opening half on a short jumper by Ahlin. LMU climbed within 30-24 on a layup by freshman guard Britney Guy at the 2:49 mark, but the Lady Railsplitters would get no closer, as AU held a 32-24 edge at the break.
The Trojans broke the contest open with a 22-7 run to start the second half, claiming a 54-31 lead with12:01 remaining.
