Trojans Lead Wire-to-Wire
ANDERSON, S.C. – With four players reaching double figures in the scoring column, Anderson outpaced Brevard, 92-66, in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action Wednesday night at the Abney Athletic Center.
Anderson (17-8, 13-4 SAC) celebrated Senior night by clinching at least a top-four finish in the league standings and will host a conference quarterfinal matchup one week from tonight. Brevard fell to 3-22 overall and 2-15 in the conference with its fifth consecutive setback.
Junior guard Chandler Hash led the Trojans with 23 points, while senior Denzail Jones added 20 points and dished out a season-high eight assists. He also swiped five steals. Senior Bo Holston tallied 15 points and recorded a game-high seven rebounds. Guard Myson Jones chipped in 14 points on the strength of 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc.
Sophomore guard Gerel Simmons led all scorers with 26 points for the Tornados, while Matthew Ward netted 14 and Dominique Pickett added 10.
The Trojans raced out to a 12-2 lead inside the first four minutes of the contest, with Brevard chipping away to climb back within 19-15 midway through the first half. But it was as close as the Tornados would get, as Myson Jones sank back-to-back 3-pointers to ignite an 11-2 run and boost Anderson’s lead to 30-17 with less than eight minutes on the clock.
Anderson took a 50-34 lead at intermission and built its lead to as much as 29 points late in the contest.
The Trojans wrap up the regular season on the road at Mars Hill on Saturday, with tip-off scheduled for 4 p.m. With a win, Anderson can clinch at least the second seed in next week’s Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament. AU defeated the Lions, 86-64, earlier this season at the Abney Center.
