Owens Earns Women's Tennis Conference Player of the Week HonorsFebruary 25, 2013
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Anderson junior Avery Owens has been named the South Atlantic Conference women’s tennis Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 24, announced conference officials on Monday.
Owens posted a perfect 8-0 combined singles and doubles record on the week, including six combined wins in conference play at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, and No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. She helped lead the Trojans to a 3-1 team record, as AU defeated SAC opponents Newberry and Mars Hill and nonconference foe Limestone– all on the road, with the lone setback, a narrow 5-4 decision, coming at Tusculum.
“Avery has proven to be one of the strongest players in the conference and won a big match on Saturday after overcoming some personal issues,” said Anderson head coach Joey Eskridge. “She won for the team.”
Owens improved to 6-1 overall in both singles and doubles action on the season on the strength of a five-match win streak on both sides and has dropped just a single set during the combined 10-match streak. Owens has not dropped a match since falling to Columbus State’s Paola Cigui on Feb. 3, who was ranked second in the region.
Owens began the undefeated week by topping Newberry’s Romina Adum, 6-4, 6-3 and teamed with Camie Beaulieu-Brunet to knock off NC’s Shannon McManus and Marina Ziehe, 8-4. She blanked Limestone’s Segolene Ollivier, 6-0, 6-0 and paired with Karen Ching to shut out LC’s Paige Palinkas and Jessica Reyes Varela, 8-0 in doubles. Owens wrapped up the weekend by defeating Tusculum’s Kate Hutchinson and MHC’s Marian Pinate and also recorded a pair of wins on the doubles’ side.
