JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Sophomore Lesley Woods poured in 19 points, including 11 in the first half, as Anderson defeated Carson-Newman, 58-51, in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse.
Anderson (19-7, 13-3 SAC) maintained its hold on first place in the league standings with its 12th win in the last 14 outings and clinched at least a tie for second place in the regular-season SAC standings. Carson-Newman fell to 13-10 overall and 7-9 in the league by dropping its fifth decision in its last six games.
Wood’s tally was just two shy of her career high, as the guard connected on 6-of-12 from the field, including five 3-pointers. Senior Breonda Shannon added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Alissa Diaz chipped in 10 points and a game-high five assists. Tilde Ahlin recorded a game-high eight rebounds.
Carson-Newman forward Nikki James shared game-high scoring honors by scoring 19 points. Teammate Courdne Miles netted 13 points.
The first half featured nine lead changes and the score was tied on nine occasions, with the Trojans gaining a six-point lead twice in the opening 20 minutes. Diaz’ jumper with 11:02 remaining gave AU a 22-16 edge, but the Lady Eagles fought back with a 10-2 surge to take a 26-24 lead with just more than seven minutes left.
Neither team gained more than a two-point lead the remainder of the half, with Carson-Newman taking a 37-35 lead to the locker room.
The Trojans claimed a 47-41 lead on Sierra Simpson’s free throw with 8:41 on the clock, but the Lady Eagles countered with six consecutive points to knot the score for the 11th and final time of the afternoon, with AU closing out the final 4:38 of the contest on an 11-4 surge to sweep the regular-season series with Carson-Newman.
Diaz sparked the final surge with a jumper, while Woods and Amanda Parris each drained a 3-pointer to fuel the run. Shannon and Simpson combined to hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final 36 seconds to thwart any Lady Eagle comeback.
Anderson closes out its home slate by playing host to Brevard on Wednesday. Tip-off versus the Tornados is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Abney Athletic Center.
