Trojan Wrestlers Post Strong Effort at Super Region I Championships
February 23, 2013KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Anderson University wrestling team posted strong showings on the first day of competition at the NCAA D-II Super Region I Championships, hosted by Kutztown University Friday at Keystone Arena.
Trojan freshman 133-pounder Zak Hale is on the cusp of garnering a berth in next month’s NCAA Championships and is one win away from earning a spot in the Super Region I championship bout. The Shaftsburg, Vt., native opened Friday’s competition by pinning American International’s Cole Ludorf at the 2:03 mark of the first period and followed with a convincing 11-3 decision over Newberry’s Nicholas Lankford.
The third-seeded Hale will square off against Shippensburg State University's No. 2 seed Cameron Throckmorton in the semifinals.
Anderson 165-pounder Jamal Lackey earned a pair of wins and is still battling for third place at the event. Lackey notched a 12-4 major decision past Gannon University’s Adam Greenman to open the tourney then dropped a 7-2 decision to Mercyhurst’s Clint Schaefer. He bounced back to pin American International’s Frederick Bruce at the 1:13 mark of their bout.
Lackey, seeded fourth, will face Penn-Johnstown’s second-seeded Keith Ryan, as he challenges for third place.
The Super Region I tournament wraps up on Saturday, with the top four placers in each weight class advancing to the national tournament in Birmingham, Ala., on March 8-9.
