
Hale and Diaz Named to the AFCU Gold Standard
February 7, 2013ANDERSON, S.C. – Wrestling’s Zak Hale, along with women’s basketball’s Alissa Diaz, have been named to the Anderson Federal Credit Union Gold Standard for their outstanding performances in the month of January.
Hale, a freshman 133-pounder, posted a stellar 9-1 record during the month of January and has dropped just three decisions the entire season. A native of Shaftsbury, Vt., Hale led Anderson with three wins at the Virginia Duals in mid-January, earning the Trojans’ lone win versus Stevens Tech, while also collecting wins in AU’s matchups with Roger Williams University and The Apprentice School.
Hale also posted an impressive 13-1 win on the Trojans’ narrow home loss to Belmont Abbey and followed with an equally impressive 14-2 major decision in the setback at Limestone. He earned three wins at the Super Region I Duals, hosted by Newberry in late January, while suffering his lone setback of the month.
Diaz averaged a team-high 18.6 points, and 6.1 rebounds, while dishing out nearly three assists per game to help lead the women’s basketball team to a stellar 7-1 record on the month. The Trojans claimed the top spot in the South Atlantic Conference on the strength of an eight-game win streak, which represented the program’s longest since the 2007-08 squad reeled off 20 consecutive victories en route to an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Diaz earned SAC Player of the Week honors on Jan. 22, after averaging a team-high 20.5 points in leading the Trojans to wins past Tusculum and Carson-Newman. The Coral Springs, Fla., native was named to the to the Capital One Academic All-District III women’s basketball first team for NCAA Division II, while sporting a 3.30 grade point average. She is currently second in the SAC in scoring and fourth in field goal percentage (49.8%).
