League-Leading Trojans Stumble at Newberry
February 6, 2013NEWBERRY, S.C. – Seniors Alissa Diaz and Breonda Shannon
combined to score 29 points, but Anderson was unable to overcome long-range
shooting woes, as Newberry defeated the Trojans, 65-50, Wednesday night at
Eleazer Arena.
Anderson (15-6, 9-2 SAC) had its season-high eight-game win
streak snapped, while suffering its first setback since early January. Newberry
(16-5, 8-3 SAC) won its second straight and has claimed wins in six of its last
seven contests.
Anderson scored the first six points of the game on
back-to-back 3-pointers from Diaz and sophomore Lesley Woods, but the Trojans
would connect on just two more treys over the remainder of the contest. Newberry
answered with an 11-3 over the next five minutes to take its first lead of the
contest, at 11-9, with 13:46 on the clock. Diaz answered with a jumper to knot
the score for the only time of the night.
Newberry pushed out to a double-digit lead on three
occasions through the opening half and five unanswered points over the final
2:12 enabled the Wolves to claim a 37-26 halftime lead.
The Wolves took a 15-point lead inside the opening three
minutes of the second stanza, before Anderson trimmed the deficit to 46-37 on a
layup by senior forward Tilde Ahlin.
But Newberry responded with a 10-3 surge to push out to a
16-point lead on two free throws.
Diaz finished with a team-high 15 points, while Shannon
added 14. Ahlin pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Newberry’s Haylee Lepaio led all players with 27 points and
11 assists, while Samantha Creed tallied 14 points and five rebounds.
The Trojans wrap up their two-game South Atlantic
Conference road swing at Catawba on Saturday. AU defeated the Indians, 70-66,
earlier this season at the Abney Athletic Center.
