Trojan Baseball Falls to ErskineFebruary 6, 2013
ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University baseball team dropped its second home decision in as many days, falling to rival Erskine, 8-3, Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Anderson fell to 0-5 on the season, while Erskine improved to 3-1.
Sophomore Nathan Galliford led the Trojans at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a single and a double and also scored a run, while sophomore Brett cash added two hits in five at-bats and drove in a ninth-inning run. Junior Josh Hickman notched a two-run double in the ninth inning, as well.
Sophomore Austin Gambrell paced the Flying Fleet with three hits and a pair of RBI, while senior Phillip Herring added a double and a single and recorded two RBI. Sophomore Cody Spence was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and junior Chase Corn posted three singles in five trips to the plate. Sophomore Logan Galliher tallied two singles and scored once.
The Flying Fleet opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning, with the Trojans countering with a solo run in the bottom of the frame. Galliford led off the inning with a double to left field and scored on Cash’s two-out double to right.
Erskine jumped out to a 7-1 lead with a pair of runs in both the third and sixth frames and added a solo run in the seventh inning to push its lead to seven.
Anderson posted two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to set the final score, as Paul Liggett led off by reaching on an error and Cash followed with a single to left. Hickman
brought both runners home with a double to right-center.
Trojan hurler Will Walls suffered the loss, surrendering five runs off nine hits, while striking out four and not issuing a walk. Sophomore Dustin Sherbert earned the win for Erskine, tossing five innings and striking out four, while walking three.
Anderson will look to break into the win column when the Trojans open a three-game weekend series by playing host to Coker. First-pitch for Saturday’s doubleheader at Memorial Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
