UNC Pembroke Earns Sweep with Extra-Inning Win Past Trojans

Box Score

PEMBROKE, N.C. – UNC Pembroke snapped a 3-3 deadlock with a run in the bottom of the 11th inning to defeat Anderson, 4-3, in nonconference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

Anderson slipped to 0-3 on the young season, while UNC Pembroke moved to 3-0 with its third consecutive series sweep past the Trojans.

Senior Erick Sanderson led the Trojans at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a double and scored a run, while outing for the visitors, while Josh Hickman, Tony Price and Paul Como each notched a pair of hits in five at-bats. Hickman also drove in two runs, with Price and freshman Steven Cooper also crossing the plate once. After managing just seven hits in Saturday’s doubleheader, Anderson erupted to out-hit the Braves 13-9 but committed four errors on the afternoon.

UNC Pembroke’s Ben Schmucker scored once on a 3-for-5 day at the plate, and Dalton Knight drove in a pair of runs while going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Braves’ hurler Jimmie Davis (1-0) struck out three, walked one and scattered three hits across three innings of relief to earn the win. Dale Innes started the game and struck out nine in five innings of work. Logan Cook struck out four and yielded two hits and a walk in three innings of relief.

Sanderson drew the start on the mound for the Trojans, scattering seven hits and three earned runs over six complete innings, while walking three and striking out three Braves. Junior Kyle Francis worked 1 1/3 innings in relief, surrendering one hit and striking out one. Sophomore hurler Landon Beck (0-1) struck out a pair of Braves and surrendered just one hit in three innings of relief, but absorbed the hard-luck loss.

UNCP got on the scoreboard first on Jordan Edgerton's RBI single in the first inning, but Anderson answered with a pair of runs in the second to grab its first lead of the series. AU sent eight batters to the plate, with Sanderson leading off the frame with a single to left field and scored on junior Jonathan Zalud’s two-out bases-loaded walk that followed Cooper and Como’s back-to-back singles. Cooper crossed the plate when Hickman drew another bases-loaded walk.

The Braves scored twice more on Knight's two-run single in the third, but the Trojans knotted the score up in the fourth on Hickman's infield single that plated Price.

The two teams battled for six scoreless innings before Schmucker delivered a one-out single for the Braves in the 11th and after Drew Alford reached on an infield error moments later, the Trojans opted to intentionally walk Zade Denton to load the bases. Chad Whitehead's hard-hit ball to the right side of the infield took a sharp bounce to the right side and bounced out of Cooper's glove at first base, allowing Schmucker to cross the plate with the game-winning run.

Anderson opens a season-high eight-game homestand on Tuesday, when the Trojans welcome Limestone to Anderson Memorial Stadium. First-pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
