Diaz Earns First-Team Academic All-District Honors

ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson University women’s basketball senior guard Alissa Diaz has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District III women’s basketball first team for NCAA Division II, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday afternoon.

The native of Coral Springs, Fla., sports a 3.30 grade point average, while majoring in biology and has been named to the Anderson University Dean’s List.

“It's an amazing honor that Alissa has been named first-team all-district,” said Anderson head coach Jim Brunelli. “She is definitely most-deserving of this award that recognizes student-athletes for their hard work and dedication in the classroom and on the court.”

The 5-foot-10 senior was a Preseason All-South Atlantic Conference selection and has earned South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week twice this season. She was also named to Alaska-Fairbanks’ Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational All-Tournament team over the Thanksgiving Holiday.

She is ninth all-time in Anderson’s record books with 1,103 career points and has started every game for the Trojans this season, while averaging a team-high 17.1 points per contest. She is second in the conference in scoring and ranks fifth in field-goal accuracy.

Diaz, who was joined on the academic team by Pfeiffer’s Brittany Cox, Young Harris’ Breanna Gleeson, UNC Pembroke’s Jazmine Kemp, Georgia College’s Shanteona Keys and USC Aiken’s Daniela Tarailo, leads the squad with 2.6 assists per game and has led the team in scoring on 16 occasions, while reaching double-figures 18 times.

In order to earn recognition, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution and are voted upon by CoSIDA members. CoSIDA District III includes the South Atlantic Conference, Peach Belt Conference and Conference Carolinas.

The Trojans begin the second half of their South Atlantic Conference schedule by playing host to Mars Hill on Saturday, with tip-off slated for 2 p.m. at the Abney Athletic Center.
