Diaz Named South Atlantic Conference Player of the WeekJanuary 22, 2013
ROCK HILL, S.C. – For the second time this season, Anderson University senior guard Alissa Diaz has been named the South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
“It is very exciting that Alissa was chosen as Player of the Week,” said Anderson head coach Jim Brunelli. “Alissa will be the first one to say that the award is as much a team honor as it is an individual award. She is a hard-working young lady and is starting to reap some of the rewards from the time spent working on her game.”
Diaz averaged a team-high 20.5 points in leading the Trojans to a pair of conference wins on the week, as AU stretched its win streak to four games while earning its ninth win in the last 11 outings. The 5-foot-10 guard also averaged 4.5 rebounds and an assist, while shooting 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the field in wins past Tusculum and Carson-Newman. Diaz has helped lead the Trojans to their best start in the conference since joining the SAC for the 2010-11 season and sole possession of second place in the league standings.
She stands just 23 points from moving into ninth place in Anderson’s record books and is currently second in the league in scoring with her 16.7 points per game.
Diaz led all players with 17 points and swiped two steals in Saturday’s win past Carson-Newman that snapped a three-game skid at the hands of the Lady Eagles, after pouring in a game-high, season-high 24 points to help lead Anderson to a 71-53 road win past Tusculum.
The Coral Springs, Fla., native also earned the honor on Dec. 10 after tossing in a then season-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting in just 23 minutes of action in the Trojans’ decisive 73-52 win past Peach Belt opponent Georgia College.
The Trojans play host to preseason conference favorite Wingate Wednesday night, with tip-off slated for 6 p.m. at the Abney Athletic Center.
