Charleston Southern Rallies To Beat AC

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern overcame a six-point deficit in the final three minutes with an 11-3 run to defeat Anderson College, 77-75, in a non-conference game Tuesday night at the CSU Field house. Senior Chris Warzynski hit two free throws with 13 seconds remaining in the game to put the Bucs over the top, 77-73. Anderson’s Donielle Davis hit a shot at the buzzer for the final margin. “We hung in there and battled against a pretty good basketball team tonight,” said CSU head coach Jim Platt. “Anderson played very hard. We didn’t play well in stretches tonight, but in the end, we hit some shots and had some defensive stops to get us over the top. It’s a good win for our basketball team.” Charleston Southern put five players in double figures, led by sophomore wing Trent Drafts, who scored a career-high 14 points and led the Bucs with eight rebounds. Senior forward Charles White scored 13 points and grabbed seven boards, while center Chris Warzynski, guard Gene Granger and forward Kevin Warzynski each scored 12 points in the victory. Anderson’s effort was paced by senior guard Robbie Seabrook, who scored 27 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Seabrook hit eight-of-12 shots from the field, including six-of-nine from beyond the arc. Davis added 16 points and Joel Zimmerman scored 12 for the Trojans, 0-1. Charleston Southern (1-1) again dominated the boards, outrebounding Anderson, 37-26, including a 16-10 advantage on the offensive glass. CSU shot 48.2 percent from the field to Anderson’s 51.1 percent and the Bucs converted 21-of-26 free throws. The game was close throughout with neither team holding more than an eight-point advantage. CSU opened the game with a 7-0 run but Anderson rallied and stayed in the contest, finally taking the lead with 3:10 left in the half, 36-33. The half ended with Anderson up, 41-40. The second-half was more of the same as each team traded mini-runs throughout the first 10 minutes. White’s offensive rebound and put back gave the Bucs a 58-55 lead with 10:47 to play, but the Trojans responded with six straight points to take a 61-58 lead with 8:39 to play. Seabrook’s three-pointer from the corner gave Anderson a 70-66 lead with four minutes remaining, but the Trojans could manage just five points down the stretch. White tied the game at 72 with 1:30 to play on a 12-footer from inside the lane. Chris Warzynski scored with 50 seconds to play to put the Bucs up, 74-72. After Seabrook hit one of two free throws with 28 seconds left, Granger hit one of two free throws with 15 seconds remaining for a two-point lead. However, on Granger’s miss, Chris Warzynski pulled down the rebound and was fouled. The 6-9 senior from Alpharetta, Georgia then calmly sank both free throws for a four-point lead with 13 seconds left in the contest. Release courtesy of CSU Sports Information Game Statistics
