
Early Pins Lift Trojan Wrestlers Past Truett McConnell
November 29, 2012ANDERSON, S.C. – Buoyed by four pins and a forfeit, the Anderson University wrestling team earned its second consecutive win by defeating Truett McConnell, 30-18, Thursday night at the Abney Athletic Center.
Anderson (2-5) showed little ill effects of a 12-day layoff, as the freshmen duo of Greg Williams and Zak Hale got the Trojans off to a quick start with back-to-back early pins.
Williams led off by pinning the Bears’ Garrett Lott with just 1:14 elapsed in the 125-pound bout, while Hale boosted the Trojans’ lead to 12-0 by pinning Truett McConnell’s Gabe Miller at the 4:01 mark of the 133-pound bout while trailing 4-3 on the scoreboard.
Truett McConnell freshman Joe Hulen scored a narrow, 7-6, decision past AU’s Eric DeAngelis at 141 pounds, but AU junior Dan Telhada answered by pinning the Bears’ Preston Steen with 34 seconds left in the first period of their 149-pound matchup.
After dropping a decision at 157 pounds, the Trojans garnered a forfeit at 165 pounds and freshman Jamal Lackey pinned Truett McConnel’s Josh Cook at the 6:05 mark to give Anderson a commanding 30-6 cushion and clinched the team victory.
Anderson will get back on the mats Tuesday, when the Trojans visit Spartanburg Methodist for a 7 p.m. match.
