WINGATE, N.C. – Using an impressive .336 hitting percentage, Wingate downed Anderson, 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-19) in South Atlantic Conference volleyball Saturday afternoon at Cuddy Arena.
Despite the setback, Anderson (13-15, 5-12 SAC) has won two off its last three, while Wingate (23-2, 12-2 SAC) claimed its 14th consecutive win.
Sophomore outside hitter Shannon Gillespie led the Trojans with seven kills and nine digs on the afternoon. Fellow sophomore Hailey Pittman added six kills, while sophomore Meghan Cautero recorded 20 assists.
Freshman Hannah Huffman led the Bulldogs with eight kills, with sophomore Susie Murach adding six. Freshman outside hitter Shelly Stumpff also had six kills, while junior Anna Hilton chipped in five kills and a match-high 14 digs. Sophomore Alison Cooke handed out a team-best 15 assists for the Bulldogs.
Wingate pushed out to a 10-4 lead in the opening set and took advantage of an impressive .500 attack percentage to claim a 19-11 lead and went on to score the final six points of the set.
The Trojans took advantage of kills by Pittman and sophomore Kelley Lacey and three errors by the Bulldogs to claim an early 5-4 lead in the second set. But a pair of kills from Wingate’s Lexi Potter and an Anderson miscue gave the Bulldogs a 7-5 advantage and Wingate edged out to an 11-8 lead. However, a Pittman kill and a Bulldog error pulled AU within two, at 12-10. Wingate countered with 11 unanswered points to take an insurmountable 23-10 lead, with Huffman notching the final point with a kill.
Anderson rallied from an early 4-1 deficit in the third set to take a brief 7-5 lead, as Gillespie posted a pair of kills and freshman Cameron Ohls added a kill and a block assist. But the Bulldogs responded with an 8-0 run to take a 13-7 advantage. With the Bulldogs holding a 16-11 lead, AU senior middle blocker Tiffany Rowe trimmed the deficit to four with a kill to make it 16-12, but kills from Huffman and Allison Rickher, along with another Rickher block made it 20-14. Another Huffman kill gave Wingate a 24-17 lead and Huffman finished the match with her seventh kill of the third set.
Anderson wraps up the regular season by playing host to Newberry on Friday. First-serve is slated for 7 p.m. at the Abney Athletic Center.
