Trojans Blank BrevardOctober 12, 2012
ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack as the Trojans opened a two-match South Atlantic Conference homestand by shutting out Brevard, 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-15) Friday night at the Abney Athletic Center.
Anderson (10-10, 3-7 SAC) snapped a two-game skid and avenged an earlier setback at the hands of the Tornados in the conference opener in mid-September, while Brevard (7-10, 1-8 SAC) suffered its tenth consecutive setback.
The Trojans snapped an early 3-3 tie in the first set with five unanswered points as freshman Victoria Wehrmann sparked the run with a kill, Kalie Endres followed with a service ace and senior middle blocker Tiffany Rowe added a solo block. Following an error by the Tornados, sophomore Kelley Lacey capped the surge with a kill.
Brevard climbed back within 12-10 on a Trojan miscue, but Anderson pushed back out to a five-point advantage twice and built a 20-13 cushion before the Tornados edged back within four, at 20-16. Leading by five late, the Trojans’ Rowe sandwiched a pair of kills around a Shannon Gillespie score to finish off the 25-16 win.
The second set saw Anderson fall behind early, but battle back to take its first lead of the frame, 10-9, on setter Meghan Cautero’s lone kill of the night. The set featured four ties before AU took a 24-19 lead on the strength of an 8-3 outburst, but the Tornados held off set point by scoring six consecutive points to take a brief 25-24 lead. Wehrmann evened the score at 25 apiece and back-to-back blocks from Wehrmann and Rowe gave the Trojans a 2-0 lead in sets.
Anderson carried the momentum into the third set, erupting on a 16-3 run that turned a 3-3 score into a 19-6 cushion. The Trojans maintained the double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Sophomore Hailey Pittman led the Trojans offensively with 11 kills, while Gillespie added nine kills and narrowly missed a double-double with 16 digs. Cautero shared match-high honors with 30 assists and completed the double-double with 11 digs. Defensively, Rowe finished with five solo blocks and three block assists, with sophomore Alix Hooker chipping in 15 digs and freshman Kim Adkins adding 11.
Brevard junior Kortney Conner led all players with 14 kills and added 18 digs, while teammate Kayla Haus tallied 30 assists. Senior Sydney Yeomans recorded a match-high 24 assists.
Anderson will look to keep the momentum going Saturday, when the Trojans play host to Lenoir-Rhyne. First-serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Abney Center.
