Men's Golf Finishes Sixth at Wingate's Pinehurst Challenge

PINEHURST, N.C. – The Anderson men’s golf team posted the third-lowest score of the final round en route to finishing sixth at Wingate University’s Pinehurst Challenge at the par 72, 7122 yard layout at the National Golf Club on Tuesday.
Lenoir-Rhyne moved up from fourth after Monday’s opening round to take the team championship with a score of 599 (+23), edging first-round leader Lincoln Memorial by a single stroke. Clifford Blanquicet of Wingate earned individual medalist honors with a score of 148 (+4). Host Wingate (603), which trailed LMU by two shots following Monday’s first round, finished third.
Sophomore Sean Shelton (77-72=149) trimmed five strokes off his first-round scorecard to finish in a six-way tie for second, just one shot behind Blanquicet. Fellow sophomore Arran Setro (77-76=153), who was tied with Shelton following Monday’s round, cut one stroke and moved into a two-way tie for 18th.
Senior Chase Epting (81-76=157) also sliced five strokes off his first-round, finishing the tourney tied for 30th, while while freshman CJ Messana (79-81=160) was three strokes further back in a tie for 40th. Junior John Moore (83-78=161) finished tied for 45th.
The Trojans are back on the links on Thursday and Friday, April 12-13, in head-to-head competition with Erskine, then close out the 2012 campaign at the South Atlantic Conference Championships in Rock Hill, S.C. on April 16-17.
