Men's Basketball Seeded Third in Southeast RegionMarch 4, 2012
ANDERSON, S.C. – The Trojan men’s basketball team has been seeded third in the NCAA’s Southeast Region and will face six-seeded Columbus State Saturday at host Montevallo as announced by the NCAA selection Committee Sunday night.
Saturday’s contest will mark the third consecutive appearance by Anderson in the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship, and the Trojans will square off against the Cougars, who entered the Peach Belt Conference Tournament as the ninth seed, but advanced to the championship game before falling, 70-57, to Montevallo Sunday afternoon
Columbus State finished the season with an 18-11 mark.
Anderson won the South Atlantic Conference regular season with a sterling 17-1 record, while going 24-5 overall to equal the school record for most wins in a season. AU became just the fourth team in South Atlantic Conference history to suffer just one loss in South Atlantic Conference regular-season play and just the second current member, since Carson-Newman in 2001-02 to go through league slate with just one loss. Heading into the NCAA Tournament, the Trojans have won 17 of their last 19 games after falling to Wingate in the SAC Tournament title game.
Anderson is led by SAC Player of the Year Denzail Jones’ 17 points per game average, while senior Nick Trull adds 14.9 points per contest and Taylor Shugart posts 11.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
The winner of Saturday’s contest will advance to meet the winner of the No. 2 seed USC Aiken/No. 7 seed Wingate game in Sunday’s semifinal round.
