Box Score

ANDERSON, S.C. – Using a balanced attack, the 16th-ranked and top-seeded Anderson men’s basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament with a 76-57 win past eighth-seeded Catawba Wednesday night at the Abney Athletic Center.

Anderson (23-4) has won nine straight games and 16 of its last 17 contests and will move on to face fourth-seeded Newberry, an 85-70 winner past No. 5 seeded Lenoir-Rhyne, in the semifinals at Noon on Saturday. Catawba saw its season end at 9-18.

Trailing, 10-7, less than four minutes into the game, the Trojans went on a 24-6 outburst over the next eight minutes to gain a double-digit advantage with 8:41 left in the opening half.

Junior Denzail Jones fueled the surge with nine points during the run and the Trojans connected on four 3-pointers – part of the season-best accuracy from beyond the arc for Anderson, as the Trojans connected on 11-of-16 (68.8 percent) long-range attempts.

Anderson took a 40-28 lead into the locker room, then scored the first eight points of the second half to put the game out of reach.

Jones led nine Trojans in the scoring column with 15 points and dished out a game-high four assists, while senior guard Nick Trull and center Taylor Shugart each added 10 points. Shugart narrowly missed his fourth double-double of the season, recording nine rebounds.

Catawba senior Justin Huntley led all scorers with 16 points and junior Kelvin Drakeford netted 13.

The semifinals and finals of the conference tournament are being held Saturday and Sunday at the Tarlton Complex on the campus of Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, N.C.
