Trojans Grapplers Compete at East Regionals
February 24, 2012PEMBROKE, N.C. – Sophomore Dan Telhada, who is seeded fifth, advanced to the semifinals of the championship round as the Anderson University wrestling team competed at the 2012 NCAA Regional Wrestling Championships, hosted by UNC Pembroke at the English E. Jones Center on Friday.
Telhada led the Anderson effort on the first day of competition, claiming a hard-fought 13-10 decision at 149 pounds past fourth-seeded Art Hobley of West Liberty University and moved on to face the No. 1 seed, Deral Brown of Newberry College in Saturday’s semifinals.
Junior 125-pounder Cory Monteforte upset eighth-seeded Zach Jones of East Stroudsburg, 6-4, in Friday’s opening round but slipped into the wrestleback with a 6-0 setback to top-seeded Ken Trumbetta. Monteforte then defeated Seton Hill’s Colten Keck, 11-3, and will meet Newberry’s Joe Cronin as the two will battle to see who advances to the semifinals of the wrestleback.
Sophomore Nick Giuliette is also still in the hunt for third place at 157 pounds after topping Ohio Valley’s Nicco Niday, the eighth seed, by a score of 4-1, but dropped a heartbreaking, 1-0, decision to the No. 1 seed, Jordan Shields to drop into the wrestleback. Giuliette then decisioned America Internationals’ Jeffrey Cole to advance and will meet fifth-seeded Bionojel Candelaria from Ohio Valley on Saturday.
The Trojans will get back on the mat Saturday at 11 a.m.
