Jones Earns SAC Player of the Week HonorsFebruary 20, 2012
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Junior Denzail Jones has been named the South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Jones earned the accolade for the second consecutive week after averaging a team-high 22 points on the week, helping extend the league-leading Trojans’ current win streak to six games. The 5-foot-9 guard drained the game-winning 3-pointer with 22 seconds on the clock to lift 24th-ranked Anderson to a 62-61 upset of No. eight LMU Saturday night, as AU clinched the SAC regular-season championship. He also posted a game-high 29 points as the Trojans posted a 75-72 road win past Tusculum last Wednesday night.
He also added five assists, four steals and 11 rebounds in the two road wins, while shooting 41.4 percent (12-of-29) from the field, including 60 percent from beyond the arc. Jones recorded a career-high eight rebounds in the win past the Pioneers, igniting a 13-3 run in the decisive second half.
Jones leads the conference and ranks 12th in the nation in steals per game and is eighth in scoring average, having reached double figures on 16 occasions this season and scored 20+ points in four of the last six games.
“Denzail had another great week,” said Anderson head coach Jason Taylor. “He just keeps getting better and the honor is well-deserved. We are very proud of him.”
The Trojans play host to Wingate Wednesday night, opening their final two-game homestand of the regular season.
