ROCK HILL, S.C. – Junior Denzail Jones has been named the South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Jones averaged 24 points in two games last week, after averaging 25.5 the previous week, helping extend the league-leading Trojans’ current win streak to four games. Anderson outpaced Newberry, 96-71, last Wednesday, holding the high-octane offense to nearly 20 points under its average, then defeated Catawba, 95-65, on Saturday afternoon.
“Denzail plays hard on both ends of the court,” said Anderson head coach Jason Taylor. “He’s been getting better and better at running the team and the honor is well-deserved. We are very proud of him.”
The Tuscaloosa, Ala., native averaged a team-high 24 points, 4.5 steals and four assists in the two wins, while shooting 59.4 percent (19-of-32) from the field. Jones garnered three of the team’s nine total steals versus the Wolves to key the defense and scored a game-high 29 points, while handing out a game-high five assists in 35 minutes of action.
Jones followed up with a team-high 19 points in just 22 minutes against Catawba, as the Trojans built a large first-half lead. He also dished out three assists and swiped six steals, while shooting 64.3% (9-of-14) in the win.
He leads the conference and ranks 16th in the nation in steals per game and is also in the top 10 in scoring average in the league. Jones has reached double figures on 14 occasions this season and scored 20+ points in three of the last four games, while averaging 4.5 steals over the past four contests.
The Trojans visit Tusculum on Wednesday night and wrap up the road portion of their schedule at LMU on Saturday.
