Anderson Cruises Past Catawba With Five Players in Double FiguresFebruary 11, 2012
ANDERSON, S.C. – With five players reaching double figures, Anderson won its fourth straight game with a 95-65 victory past Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center.
With the win, Anderson (18-4, 13-1 SAC) clinched at least the No. 4 seed in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament that starts later this month and maintained at least at least a one-game lead on Lincoln Memorial in the league standings with four conference contests remaining. Catawba fell to 6-16 overall and 3-11 in the league, while dropping their fourth decision in the last five outings.
The Trojan defense held Catawba scoreless for nearly five minutes to open the game, with the Indians misfiring on their first eight shots f the contest. The drought enabled Anderson to overcome its own early shooting woes (2-of-9), as the Trojans scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed.
Anderson built an 18-point lead late in the opening half and held a 48-31 halftime advantage.
Catawba held a 39-26 rebounding advantage, but Anderson outshot the Indians, 56.9 percent to 38.6 percent, with AU connecting on 10-of-19 from beyond the arc. The Trojans also converted 24 Catawba turnovers into 36 points.
Junior guard Denzail Jones led five Trojans in double figures with 19 points, while recording a game-high six steals and handing out three assists. Sophomore Chandler Hash added 13 points and shared game-high honors with four assists and senior Stephen Cobb netted 12 points. Seniors Taylor Shugart and Nick Trull finished with 10 points apiece, with Trull dishing out four assists.
Catawba sophomore guard Keon Moore led all scorers with 21 points and recorded 11 rebounds.
The Trojans go on the road for their final two-game conference road swing of the season, beginning with Tusculum on Wednesday and closing with second-place LMU one week from today.
