Trojans Earning Votes in National Coaches PollJanuary 17, 2012
ANDERSON, S.C. – After having defeated top-rated and previously unbeaten Lincoln Memorial last Saturday, the Anderson University men’s basketball team is receiving votes in the latest NABC/Division II Coaches' Poll, as released Tuesday afternoon.
Anderson (11-3, 6-0 South Atlantic Conference) is riding a four-game win streak and is coming off a 78-72 overtime thriller past the Railsplitters at the Abney Center. The Trojans have won eight of their last nine games and currently sit atop the league standings.
The Trojans are led in scoring by senior guard Nick Trull, who stands in fourth place all-time in AU’s scoring record book, but is just eight points shy of former standout Clay Huggins’ third-place total of 1,314 points. Fellow senior Taylor Shugart has earned back-to-back SAC Player of the Week honors after posting his third straight double-double versus LMU. The Rock Hill, S.C., native averaged a team-high 23 points and 14 rebounds in two wins last week.
Coach Jason Taylor’s squad continues to build on the momentum of back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament, and a trip to last season’s Elite Eight. Last season saw Anderson become just the second team in league history to claim an NCAA Regional Championship and the first team from the Palmetto State to win a regional championship since Lander in 1999.
AU is looking to remain unbeaten in the conference as Tusculum College invades the Abney Athletic Center Wednesday night in the second game of a women’s/men’s doubleheader slated to start at 6 p.m.
