Shugart Earns Second Consecutive Conference Player of the Week HonorsJanuary 17, 2012
ROCK HILL, S.C. – On the heels of his third straight double-double performance, Anderson University senior Taylor Shugart has been named the South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
Shugart averaged a double-double for the second consecutive week, leading the Trojans to a perfect 2-0 record on the week, as AU outlasted the high-powered Newberry offense, 101-98, last Wednesday, then upset top-ranked and previously unbeaten Lincoln Memorial, 78-72, in overtime Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center.
The Rock Hill, S.C., native averaged a team-high 23 points and 14 rebounds in the two wins, while shooting 62.5 percent (20-of-32) from the field. Shugart garnered 13 of his 28 total rebounds on the offensive end, while recording three steals and three blocked shots in the victories. The 6-foot-7 center’s 23 points in each contest equaled his season-high and was just one shy of his career-high 24 points set last season.
Shugart scored a team-high 23 points versus the Wolves on the strength of 11-of-15 shooting from the field, while collecting 14 rebounds. He followed up with his fourth straight double-digit scoring performance with a game-high 23 points and claimed rebounding honors with 14 boards in the win past No. 1 LMU for his third straight and 10th career double-double. On the season, he leads the team and ranks fourth in the SAC with 7.9 rebounds per game.
“Taylor had another great week,” said Anderson head coach Jason Taylor. “Our guys were getting him the ball and he was finishing. He also rebounded very well. He’s been our anchor and we are very proud of how well he played and how well his teammates got him the ball.”
Anderson wraps up its two-game homestand Wednesday night by playing host to Tusculum. Tip-off versus the Pioneers is slated for 8 p.m.
