Veterans Lead Trojans Past Catawba

Box Score

SALISBURY, N.C. – Veterans Taylor Shugart, Nick Trull and Denzail Jones combined for 49 points, as the Anderson men’s basketball team earned its sixth win in the last seven outings by defeating Catawba, 75-65, in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym.

Anderson (9-3, 4-0 SAC) claimed its second straight win and stayed undefeated in league play, while Catawba (3-9, 0-4 SAC) suffered its seventh consecutive setback.

Both teams opened the game slowly, as the two squads combined for a total of just four field goals in the first eight minutes and committed 15 turnovers in the opening 11 minutes of action.

With neither team able to build more than a six-point lead in the first half, the Indians snapped a 19-19 tie with six unanswered points, but Anderson responded with a 15-4 run over the final 5:32 of the half to take a 34-29 halftime advantage.

Trojan senior forward Jo’el Lamb ignited the AU rally with a traditional three-point play, with guard Denzail Jones scoring six consecutive points for the Trojans during a 68-second span late in the half and senior guard Nick Trull capped the surge with a 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

Anderson pushed out to a 14-point lead with less than eight minutes gone in the second frame, with Trull and Jones combining to score nine points in a three-minute span and the Trojans held a 16-point lead, their largest of the contest, on five occasions.

Catawba climbed within 73-65 in the final moments, but would get no closer.

Shugart led all scorers with 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, while Trull added 17 points and handed out four assists. Jones chipped in 10 points and recorded six rebounds, with freshman D.J. McGowan coming off the b bench to post a season-high nine points.
Preseason First-Team All-SAC selection Keon Moore paced the Indians with 18 points. Lee Martin added 14 points and Tyrece Little and Stuart Thomson notched 11 points apiece.

The Trojans wrap up their three-game South Atlantic Conference road swing Wednesday night at Newberry, with tip-off slated for 8 p.m.
