Trojans Top Brevard in OvertimeNovember 30, 2011
BREVARD, N.C. – Guards Nick Trull and Denzail Jones led the Trojans offensively, as Anderson defeated Brevard, 66-62, in overtime in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball Wednesday night at Boshamer Gymnasium.
The conference opener for both teams saw just four ties and two lead changes, as Anderson (4-2, 1-0 SAC) worked off the rust from a seven-day layoff, while Brevard (1-8, 0-1) was playing its third contest in five days and claimed their first win of the season just two nights ago
The Trojans opened a 14-8 lead midway through the opening half, as Trull and Jones each posted five points. Anderson maintained the lead throughout the low-scoring first half, pushing out to a 22-14 advantage with just more than four minutes on the clock. Leading by two, 16-14, the Trojans scored six unanswered points, with sophomore guard Chandler Hash sparking the surge with back-to-back 3-pointers to force a Tornado timeout.
Senior forward Tyrell McDowell’s first basket of the contest gave AU its largest lead of the first half, 26-18, with 60 seconds left and following a basket by Tornado senior guard Gaither Hendrix, the Trojans called a 30-second timeout but were unable to get off a shot before the horn.
The Trojans edged out to a pair of double-digit leads inside the first four minutes of the final half and claimed its largest lead of the game, 34-22, on a jumper from Jones with 16:17 on the clock, but Brevard inched back and eventually took its first lead of the contest, 51-50, on layup from guard Drew Schauss at the 3:22 mark.
Jones evened the score by hitting one-of-two free throws 32 seconds later and senior Taylor Shugart dropped in a short jumper to boost the Trojan advantage to 53-51 with 2:06 remaining. Brevard’s Aleks Vasiljevic responded with a basket to knot the score yet again, while AU senior Stephen Cobb gave AU a two-point advantage with 39 seconds left. But Brevard senior guard Gaither Hendrix, a preseason All-SAC selection, connected on two free throws with 26 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
AU’s McDowell opened the overtime by draining his first 3-pointer of the night and the Trojans never trailed during the extra period, as Trull’s trey with 3:10 left gave Anderson a 63-57 cushion.
The Tornados pulled within one possession, at 65-62, with just less than a minute remaining, but Trull sealed the win by hitting one-of-two free throws with 14 ticks left and the AU defense forced a Brevard miss in the final moments.
Trull notched a team-high 14 points, while Jones added 13 and dished out three assists on the night. Shugart grabbed a team-high six rebounds in just 22 minutes of action.
Hendrix led all scorers with 22 points, while Schauss chipped in 17.
Anderson plays host to conference opponent Mars Hill in the nightcap of a women’s-men’s doubleheader on Saturday, with tip-off for the doubleheader slated for 2 p.m.
