Freshman Averaged 15 points on Opening Weekend
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Freshman guard Denzail Jones has been named the South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Jones made his presence felt at the SAC/Peach Belt Classic, helping lead the Trojans to a 1-1 record at the event hosted by Tusculum in Greeneville, Tenn. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged a team-high 15 points and four assists over the two-day event. He also recorded six rebounds from his guard spot and connected on 12-of-14 (.857) free throws.
“We are very happy for Denzail to be receiving this recognition,” said Anderson head coach Jason Taylor. “As usual, individual recognition is the result of the team’s accomplishments. Denzail plays with great energy on both sides of the ball and loves to compete. He made the game simple on offense this weekend and had a positive assist/turnover ratio against two really good teams.”
A native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Jones notched a team-best 17 points and five assists in the setback to Augusta State on Friday. The Trojans rallied from an 18-point deficit with 13 minutes remaining against the three-time defending regional champion before falling, 78-72.
Jones dropped in a driving layup with nine seconds remaining in overtime as AU topped Clayton State, 70-69, on Saturday. He scored five points in the final 1:10 of regulation as the Trojans rallied to send the game into overtime.
This week, the Trojans sandwich a pair of road contests at South Carolina State on Tuesday and Montevallo on Saturday around a home contest versus rival Erskine on Wednesday.
