ANDERSON WINS 3RD STRAIGHT JOBY HAWN CUP

HIGH POINT, NC--Anderson University has been awarded the annual Joby Hawn Cup, in recognition of excellence in all conference-sponsored sports. The Hawn Cup is awarded each year in honor of former Commissioner H.C. "Joby" Hawn for his many years of service to the former Carolinas Conference. Hawn Cup points are awarded in each sport based on the order of regular season finish with bonus points going to the tournament champion and runner-up finishers, based on the number of participating teams in each sport. Men's & women's golf, men's and women's cross country, and men's and women's track & field are the only conference sponsored sports in which points are determined by conference tournament finish. Anderson University earned their third consecutive Hawn Cup with a member institution high 0.562 rating. This is the third consecutive and third time overall that Anderson has won the award. Before winning the past three years, the Trojans previously finished twice at third (03-04, 04-05), three times at fifth (01-02, 02-03, 05-06), and twice at seventh (99-00, 00-01) in the overall Hawn Cup title history. This is also only the third time a South Carolina member has claimed the honor. In 15 conference sports, Anderson showed remarkable consistency, averaging 7.42 points per sport. Without winning any regular season titles, Anderson won three conference tournament titles in volleyball, women’s basketball, and men's tennis. Anderson recorded double-digit points in women's cross country (10), men’s soccer (12.75), volleyball (15.5), women's basketball (14.5), and men's tennis (12.5). Limestone College finishes second just shy of Anderson again for the third straight year scoring a 0.549 rating. This was the fourth consecutive year that Limestone set/tied their personal best finish. Schools making the biggest moves in the right direction were Belmont Abbey College, Erskine College and Barton College. Belmont Abbey was the most improved, moving two spots from fifth to third. Following the Abbey, were both Erskine (7th) and Barton (8th), as they both moved up a spot from last year. Erskine has moved-up a total of four spots in the last two years. Rounding out the schools in order were Anderson, Limestone, Belmont Abbey, Mount Olive, Pfeiffer, Lees-McRae, Erskine, Barton, Queens, Coker, St. Andrews, and Converse respectively. This was the second year under the Conference Carolinas moniker as the conference changed its name from the CVAC back on June 1, 2007. While Anderson was the last member to attain the CVAC Hawn Cup two years ago, they are now the first member to repeat as the Conference Carolinas Hawn Cup Award winner.
