February 14, 2009In a tight contest the Lady Trojans edged the Queens University Women 5-4. Queens took a 2-1 after the doubles through a 8-6 win by the team of Mileva/Blakey over the AU team of Gallegos/Halbert. At Nr 2 doubles the team of Hawn/Winship defeated AU's team of Goncalves/Lisa Gorman while the AU team of Anderson/Laura Gorman got the Trojans on the board with a 8-1 win over the Queens team of LaRocco/Oneil. In singles action Queens added to the lead by a 6-3, 6-2 victory by Elena Mileva over AU

However AU came back and tied the match at 3-3 with wins from AU Nr 3 Shelby Anderson 6-0, 6-1 over QU Hewit Hawn and a 6-0, 6-1 win by AU Nr 4 Milena Goncalves over QU Amanda LaRocco. Wins then by AU Nr 5 Laura Gorman 6-4, 6-1 over QU Katherine Winship and AU Nr 6 Lisa Gorman 6-1, 6-2 over QU Amanda Oneil were enough to clinch the match. The last singles was won by QU Nr 2 Kaitlyn Blakey by defeating AU Julie Halbert 2-6, 7-5,7-5 to set the final score of 5-4. "Today was a big win for this team, even though we went 2-1 after doubles the girls never lost their spirit. They all stepped up just like I asked them to do. This was definitely a team effort" Ivarsson said after the close victory. The Lady Trojans will be back in action on February 20th when they be host to the Augusta State Jaguars.
