Trojans Outlast Tusculum
March 29, 2007GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 24 Anderson University men’s tennis team outlasted No. 39 Tusculum College 5-3 Thursday at the Nichols Tennis Complex. The Trojans improve to 10-6 on the year, while the Pioneers (10-3) have their four-match winning streak halted. Anderson took a 2-1 lead after doubles play as Andres Weisskopf and Marc Pibernat recorded an 8-5 pro set win at the No. 2 flight over Leo Guaycurus and Henrique Rodrigues. Tusculum captured the point at No. 1 doubles as Sergio Espinosa and Carlos Garcia defeated AU’s Srkirishna Ramanathan and Renato Assuncao, 8-4. Ramanathan and Assuncao are ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Region. Espinosa and Garcia recorded wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively as the Pioneers took a 3-2 advantage. Jose Augusto Gaspar outlasted Nicolas Bigler 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to tie the match. Assuncao and Pipernat won the match for Anderson with wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 flights in straight sets. Tusculum will host Newberry College on Saturday at 11 a.m., while Anderson will entertain Coker College at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Doubles -- Espinosa/Garcia (TC) def.
