Women's Golf Finishes 4th; Men Wrap up in 10th

CLEMMONS, N.C. -- The Trojan women's golf team finished in fourth place, while the Anderson men's team closed in 10th place at the 2010 Conference Carolinas Golf Championships, hosted by Belmont Abbey at Tanglewood Park (Championship Course) in Clemmons, North Carolina.

The Belmont Abbey men's and women's golf teams were crowned champions and Abbey freshman Melissa Siviter and senior Joe Campbell claimed medalist honors after three days of competition. The women's tournament, being played on a 5,805-yard, par 72 course, saw Anderson improve by one shot but was unable to overtake Queens, while the Abbey, which is ranked fifth in the nation, led wire-to-wire as four of the five Crusader players finished one through four. Belmont Abbey led by 26 shots after the first day, 41 yesterday and won by a margin of 55 shots over Pfeiffer and Queens, which finished in a tie for second with scores of 987.

Siviter, the Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year, won by three shots over teammate Liz Cortez and six over Carley Warrington. Siviter bookended rounds of 76 between a second round 78. Cortez entered the final round leading Siviter by one stroke, but her 80 today left her in second. Pfeiffer, which was in second after the opening round, fell one spot after the second round but it posted a team-best 321 in the final round to finish even with Queens, which ended the tournament with rounds of 326 in the second and final rounds.

Anderson, competing for the last time as a member of Conference Carolinas, finished fourth, four shots ahead of fifth place Mount Olive. Erskine ended up alone in sixth, while Limestone and Saint Andrews placed seventh and eighth, respectively. Individually, Kalyn Johnson (85-83-85=250) improved her scorecard each day and moved into 14th, with Laura Buyers (88-81-84=253) and Hayley Parks (85-85-83=253) playing well enough to grab a share of 16th.

Senior Sophie Dembroski (88-85-84=257) earned a share of 20th, while Lindsay Parks (89-92-86=267) sliced an impressive six strokes off Monday’s second round to earn the 29th spot.

The men's tournament, being played on a 6,826-yard, par 70 layout, turned into a two-team race, as the Abbey entered the final round leading Barton by seven strokes. The Bulldogs rallied to take a two-shot lead with the final group still on the course, but Campbell's even par 70 proved to be the difference as the Abbey won by a razor-thin margin of three shots. Campbell won the individual title by nine strokes as he carded rounds of 73-68-70. Barton posted a final round 297 to the Abbey's 301, but the second round edge was just enough as the Crusaders held on with a final score of 885 to Barton's 888. Coker finished third with a score of 907, four shots ahead of Saint Andrews Presbyterian, who began the day in third place. Limestone and Queens ended up tied for fifth while Mount Olive finished alone in seventh.

The Trojans were in tenth after day one, moved to eighth and ended up in seventh, two shots clear of Pfeiffer. Erskine, Anderson and Lees-McRae rounded out the field. For AU, Ryan Booth (77-80-77=234) returned to Sunday’s form and finished the event tied for 30th, while teammates Chase Epting (80-75-82=237) and Kenny Shockley (83-79-75=162) moved in opposite directions on the final day, with each collecting a share of 39th. Charlie Bagwell (81-81-82=244) was consistent throughout the tourney, and finished in 48th. Won Jacob Yoon (80-88-85=253) trimmed three shots off yesterday’s card and finished 53rd.
