Women's Golf Team Picked Second In CVAC Poll

THOMASVILLE, N.C. -- The Pfeiffer University women's golf team is picked first in this year’s CVAC preseason coaches poll. In just their second year of competition, the Falcon women are ranked No. 13 in the nation and No. 7 in the South Region. Led by top returnee’s Leslie Ledbetter (2004 CVAC Freshmen of the Year and first-team All-CVAC), Cassie Grief (second-team All-CVAC) and top newcomers Fiona Hindshaw and Nikki Taggart, the Lady Falcons had an impressive fall with a fifth-place finish, two third-place finishes and two second-place finishes. Freshmen Fiona Hindshaw capped of the fall season with Pfeiffer’s first individual title at the Fall Slam in Florida. “I have been extremely impressed with the entire team this fall”, said Pfeiffer head coach Jim Haughey. “If we continue where they left off last fall, we have a great chance to win our first conference title and make an NCAA Regional appearance”. Anderson College head women’s golf coach Danny Neal says his team is going to have to step up to defend its CVAC title this spring as AC gets the #2 slot in the preseason poll. The Lady Trojans won the first-ever women’s CVAC Championship Tournament last spring, but the task is going to be much tougher in 2005. “Last year, we won the conference shooting 345 three days in a row,” Neal said. “That’s not even going to come close this year. Other teams in the CVAC were shooting upper 320s consistently in the fall. We have an uphill battle to repeat.” Anderson is missing CVAC Player of the Year Kathryn Adkins, who wrapped her career by winning the CVAC individual title. “We have a talented team, and potentially, we’ve got a real good team,” Neal said. “There’s no reason we can’t compete.” The Lady Trojans are led by senior Brandi Jackson and sophomore Carlie Eastman. The Limestone women are once again in third place in the poll. The Lady Saints finished second in last year’s CVAC Championship at Pinehurst. The Lady Saints return a trio of players from a team that posted a total of 11 top-10 finishes. Juniors Maggie Caron and Holly Tomkins earned All-CVAC honors for their performances last year. Lisa Dunagin also turned in a solid season and is looking to improve even further for her senior season. Rounding out the CVAC women’s golf preseason poll 4-6 are: Queens, Mount Olive and St. Andrews. CVAC Women's Golf Pre-Season Coaches Poll (First place votes in parenthesis) 1.
