Women's Golf Team In Eighth Place At Kiawah

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- West Florida's Vicky Jackson carded a two-over par 74 to lead the Argonauts to an opening round 318 to lead after day one of the 2004 Tusculum College/Kiawah Island Women's Golf Intercollegiate Saturday. The 36-hole tournament is being played at the par 72, 5,800-yard Cougar Point Golf Club. West Florida, ranked No. 24 in NCAA Division II, holds an 18-stroke advantage over second place No. 15 Central Arkansas with 336. No. 14 Nova Southeastern is in third place with 337, followed by the Savannah College of Art and Design (345) and No. 17 Catawba College (354). No. 20 Lenoir-Rhyne College is sixth with 355, No. 22 Wingate University carded a 360 and is seventh and Anderson College is eighth at 361. Three teams are tied for ninth with 372, including host Tusculum, Pfeiffer University and Limestone College. Queens University of Charlotte rounded out the scoring. Anderson's low round on Saturday was an 85 by Brandi Jackson. The Argonauts have three players in the top 10 as Clara Fornella fired a 75, one shot off the pace set by Jackson. UWF's is in a three-way tie for eighth place with 84. Catawba's Paige Haverty is in third place with 77, while Lisa Bowden of Central Arkansas posted an 80 and is in fourth. Lindsay Weston (Central Arkansas), Rebecca Pomichter (Nova Southeastern) and Emily Sisson (Nova Southeastern) are in a three-way tie for fifth place at 82. Holly Young (Savannah College of Art and Design), Martina Moo Young (Wingate) and Nicholson are tied for eighth with 84 to round out the top 10. The final round will be played Sunday.
